Standing Portrait of a Decorated WW2 Soviet Soldier, in pencil, circa mid- to late 1940s.

Large format, 16" x 23". In pencil on vellum paper. The drawing depicts a decorated WW2 Soviet soldier (a private, if the artist was precise in imaging the shoulder boards) wearing an M-43 uniform, standing with a smile on his face, holding what looks like a letter from home. The drawing may be a little unfinished but the artist did a great job capturing and rendering on paper perhaps the happiest moment in a soldier's life during a war, a word from home.

In very good to excellent condition. The figure of the soldier is free of any wear or damage. As almost all original artwork in

The drawing may be a little unfinished but the artist did a great job capturing and rendering on paper perhaps the happiest moment in a soldier's life during a war, a word from home.

In very good to excellent condition. The figure of the soldier is free of any wear or damage. As almost all original artwork in pencil, it shows "the artist at work", i.e., fingerprints and smears of graphite at the edges, as well as traces of graphite transferred from other drawings held together in a sketchpad or folio. This is exactly what adds to the air of authenticity of the drawing. This, and the tiny pushpin holes at the corners, left from when the sheet was pinned to an easel or a drawing board. The right edge of the paper shows wrinkles and small tears, far from reaching the image of the soldier and not too detractive.

This particular drawing also has a somewhat unusual "proof" of being an original work of art. The verso shows an unfinished still life in water color. The shape and size of the sketched-out bottle suggest that it was probably meant to be a "Still Life with Moonshine". In any case, the watercolors do not show through the paper. This drawing can be easily framed, and will add a wonderful personal touch to a collection of WW2 personal effects and trench art.
