Measures 27 x 35" overall, image size is approx. 23 x 31". Oil on canvas, on original stretcher and with original frame. The original of this reproduction was painted by Ivan Shishkin, one of the greatest Russian classicists-landscapists whose masterpieces, hymns to the beauty of Russian nature, are the gems of the most prestigious Russian museums of fine arts as well as of smaller museums across Russia.

The reverse features two paper tags. The smaller one is the trademark of the Kharkiv Factory of Artistic Products. The larger tag under it is the factory's approval certificate issued by the factory's Art Council. It specifies - incorrectly! - the name of the original painting as "The Pond in Pavlovsk", the name of the original artist Shishkin, the name of the artist who had painted this reproduction, D. Denishenko, and the date the approval was issued, November 30, 1953.

We are compelled to point out the confluence of several factors which make this painting much more attractive than most Soviet era reproductions of classic works of art. First, it was made in early post-WW2 years which makes it rare just by that factor; but this is further augmented by its original stretcher and frame. Secondly, it was painted by a professional and talented artist who made a fantastic job of rendering the beauty of Shishkin's masterpiece. Well above the level of your average sloppy reproduction you could find on a wall in a school, administrative building, or factory. And, finally, all the details one may want to know about this painting are stated on the paper tags on the verso, - all original and still in place. Part of the approval certificate is torn off but, luckily, all the pertinent information is on the remaining piece, and perfectly legible!

The painting is in very good condition. There is mild craquelure and a couple of small chips to the paint, mostly at the top of the canvas. The center of the canvas is slightly warped, not affecting the perception of the image. The frame shows mild to moderate wear to its external decorative layer of plaster. None of the wear is too intrusive to the eye, nor detracting from the contemplative calm of the autumnal landscape.

The Pavlovsk (aka Pavlovskoye) Park is the park part of the palace-park ensemble near St. Petersburg, sprawling over almost 1,500 acres. Its history goes back to 1778 when its development began as a suburban residence (dacha in modern Russian terminology) for the heir to the throne, Paul, son of Empress Catherine the Great. To this day, Pavlovsk is a stunningly beautiful immaculately landscaped palace-park ensemble with the status of federal national park, also attracting thousands of visitors for its many collections of Russian, Western European and antique art.

Ivan Shishkin (Иван Иванович Шишкин, 1831 - 1898), is deservedly recognized as one of the greatest masters of realistic landscape of the 2nd half of XIX century. He was an academician, professor, head of the landscape workshop of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and one of the founders of the famous Russian Fellowship of Mobile Art Exhibitions (the so-called "Peredvizhniki").

Please note that the podstakannik in our last photo is for size reference, and a subtle hint suggesting how enjoyable it will be to admire this marvel of Russian landscape while sipping hot fragrant tea the Russian style, - from a thin glass in a podstakannik.

Please note: the painting will be shipped as you see it in our photos, i.e., on its original stretcher and in the frame, not rolled.
Due to the large size of the painting, special shipping charges will apply, higher than our default USPS and UPS rates. If you would like to inquire about the shipping and handling costs prior to placing the order, please contact us with your shipping address.
