Document for a Medal for the Defense of Moscow, awarded on 1
October 1945 to Private Ivan Golovin.
The document is of the early type, printed on thinner and
somewhat glossier paper than the most other campaign medal
certificate (same type of paper was also used for some of
the Defense of Polar Region Medal documents). Note a very
low serial number of the certificate printed under the image
of the medal: Series B (Cyrillic "V"), #000499.
This Moscow Medal document is a scarce version having
typographically printed text at the bottom for the position
of the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Soviet
(Council) of Workers Deputies of the city of Moscow and the
Secretary of the committee. These entries are absent in vast
majority of Moscow Medal certificates because they were
designed to be issued by military units rather than the city
government. A facsimile signature of both officials appears
on the bottom right.
Interestingly, although the document is city council issue,
the ink stamp is of a military unit - Command of the 260th
Rifle Division - which seems to indicate that Private
Golovin was still on active duty in the unit at the time.
Condition is very good overall. Both the cover and internal
pages are very clean, completely free of stains, soiling or
fingerprints. There are separations along the spine, common
to the documents of this type due to more brittle paper. The
pages however are holding together well and for the time
being, do not require a backing tape repair.
