Caucasian Kinjal with silver scabbard and handle, West Georgian style, circa 1890s through 1910s.

Caucasian Kinjal with silver scabbard and handle, West Georgian style, circa 1890s through 1910s.

A massive and imposing piece: measures 19" in overall length with a 13" blade and weighs well over a pound. Intricately and tastefully decorated with silver filigree wire, niello work and etching. The inner side of the scabbard is etched with Georgian inscription "To a Handsome Man".

Exterior condition is outstanding, showing a pleasing age patina and light wear only. Reverse side of scabbard with several light bumps, some scratches, but overall outstanding. The blade is solid but pitted. It has been sharpened, shows several nicks. Most pitting is confined to the upper 2" near the grip, possibly because moisture entered the scabbard or it was left partly exposed during years of storage.

Excellent, very attractive example of typical Western Georgian style in edged weapons of Trans-Caucasus manufacture, as described in the reference catalog "Weapons of the Nations of the Caucasus" by Emma Asvatsaturyan (see fig. 301, 303).
