Russian Orthodox Antique Icon of Virgin of Passion (Икона
Божией Матери "Страстная") in Bronze with Polychrome Enamel,
last quarter of XIX - early XX Century.
In bronze and enamels; measures 87 mm in width, x 102 mm
(approximately 4") in overall height including the crown.
The enamels are of four different colors: three shades of
blue and turquoise.
This version of the image of the Virgin is referred to as
"Passionate" (Страстная), because it depicts two angels on
either side of Mary carrying the Instruments of Passion of
Jesus such as the Cross, Sponge and Lance. The original icon
became famous in the first half of XVII C. by miraculously
curing many afflictions and was eventually placed in the
Spassikiy Monastery in Moscow. The "Passionate" image is
uncommon compared to some of the other traditional
depictions of the Virgin and Child in Eastern Orthodox
The icon is in very good condition. The enamel in its
central portion is almost perfect having only a couple of
very minor imperfections, no significant flaws. The blue
border is chipped on the right side at the bottom edge, but
this is not too detrimental to the overall impression from
the icon. The details of the artwork are beautifully
preserved showing only light wear to the highest points.
