Hand-Colored Lithograph Illustrating Senior Officer and Enlisted Cavalryman from the Russian Cuirassier Guards Regiment of His Majesty the Emperor, Reign of Nicholas I, 1834 - 1843.

Hand-Colored Lithograph Illustrating Senior Officer and Enlisted Cavalryman from the Russian Cuirassier Guards Regiment of His Majesty the Emperor, Reign of Nicholas I, 1834 - 1843. Hand-colored lithograph printed in 1861-62, Number 687 in the series of prints illustrating uniforms of the Russian Army from the Reign of Nicholas I (1825- 1855). Printed in Paris,

France in during 1861-62, soon after the Crimean War. Large format: 12 1/2" by 17" [32 X 43cm], image size: 7 1/8" by 9 " [18 X 25cm]. This beautifully executed lithograph was printed by the famous Parisian firm of (Joseph) Lemercier and meticulously hand-colored.

The lithograph is in very good to excellent condition. Although well over one hundred and fifty years old, the paper it is printed on shows no signs of brittleness and the colors are "fresh as new." Unlike many other prints of its vintage, it is completely free of foxing and shows almost none of the usual tanning to the margins. There is minimal amount of wear to the upper edge, no significant tears. A single faint water stain in the lower right corner would be mostly covered by a mat when the lithograph is properly framed.

This particular piece is a real stand-out in the overall spectacular series of Lemercier's Russian Army prints not only because of the elite nature of the unit it portrays, but also because of its rather uncommon composition of two widely different ranks in a single frame. Besides the fact that this lithograph is a significant historic document in and of itself, it represents a rare and uniquely affordable opportunity for the collector of items related to the Russian Empire to own and display at home original nineteenth century artwork.
