Flag of a Naval Hydrographic Research Vessel, circa 1960s-70s.
In wool bunting, measures 17" x 28". Navy blue field with a regular naval ensign in the upper left corner and black circle in the field with a lighthouse. Manufacturer's stamp on the hoist sleeve. There is no date, but the flag appears to be of relatively early issue judging by it hoist sleeve fabric and rope.
Excellent condition. The colors are strong. We could find only a couple of miniscule moth nips to the navy blue field, almost unnoticeable. There are no significant moth bites, active moth problem or soiling.
Soviet spy ships are known to have commonly used the guise of hydrographic surveys (or civilian oceanographic research) to conduct espionage activities off the coastlines of NATO countries, which makes this a perfect addition to a Cold War "spy" collection.
