Document for a Badge for Battle of Lake Khasan, issued on 25 February 1940 to Semyon Savenkov.

Document for a Badge for Battle of Lake Khasan, issued on 25 February 1940 to Semyon Savenkov.

Hard-covered booklet bound in red leatherette. The front cover has impressed inscription "First Separate Order of the Red Banner Army. Identification of a Participant of the Fighting at (Lake) Khasan, 1939". Includes a nice photo of the recipient that was added at a later date, probably circa 1943-44. Even though the photo is a later addition, it is believed to be a photo of the original recipient of the document, Semyon Savenkov. Note that is shows him wearing a M43 gimnasterka shirt with shoulder straps of an NCO. Under the photo is an ink stamp of the military unit where the recipient served in 1940: 59th Posyetskiy Order of the Red Banner NKVD Border Guard Unit.

The name of the unit refers to its location in the Posyet administrative district on the Gulf of Posyet, at the southernmost tip of the Soviet Maritime (Vladivostok) Region bordering North Korea. In 1939, the district was renamed Khasanskiy District in honor of the Battle of Lake Khasan. The border guard unit was then alternatively referred to as Poesyetskiy or Khasanskiy in official Soviet documents and apparently retained its old stamp at least through early 1940.

The document is in excellent condition. The cover shows almost none of the usual wear and soiling. The internal pages are very clean showing only the normal darkening from age along the borders, no significant stains or excessive wear.
