Ivory-handled silver creamer by Sazikov, Moscow, 1844.

Ivory-handled silver creamer by Sazikov, Moscow, 1844.

Weighs 142.5 grams (which includes the handle); measures 12 cm tall (approx. 4 ") including the top portion of the ivory handle, 11 cm wide from outer curve of the handle to front of the spout; the bowl portion is about 6 cm in diameter. Interior is gilded.

The bottom has clearly stamped maker mark САЗИКОВ ("Sazikov") and double-headed eagle warrant signifying that the jewelry firm was appointed as official supplier to the Russian Court. The 84 silver hallmark is less clearly defined but the 1844 year of manufacture is nevertheless legible while the designation of the Moscow assay inspection (St. George slaying the dragon) can be rather guessed by its shape.

The creamer is in very fine condition, free of significant flaws. The handle has a few minor scuffs and a couple of tiny chips visible at very close inspection, but remains completely sound. Over the past decades the ivory has acquired slightly darker shaded areas and attractive honey tone that now provide just the right balance of character and beauty. The silver has extensive patina throughout, but the gilt on the interior of the creamer is nevertheless clearly visible. There are no significant scratches or noticeable dings; the details of the florals along the upper edge as well as on the decorative feet are magnificently defined. There are some very minor bumps near the bottom that are almost unnoticeable and do not detract in the least from the overall appearance of this beautiful antique piece.
