Navy dress dagger with leather sheath, dated 1954.

Navy dress dagger with leather sheath, dated 1954.

Maker marked "ZIK" and has 1954 date of manufacture on the ricasso. The other side of the blade has engraved serial numbered "N14445." The pommel displays the Soviet State emblem of the style introduced in mid-1946 and used until 1955, with 16 scrolls representing the number of republics in the Soviet Union. The quality is spectacular, typical of Soviet daggers produced before the second half of the 50s (after 1955, the austerity measures and high production demands called for cutting some corners and using cheaper materials - such as varnish instead of gold plating on the brass parts).

The brass fittings show small diamond-shaped marks near the rivets. There is a matching diamond-shaped mark to the leather between the middle and upper fittings of the scabbard. Additionally, there is the standard diamond-shaped maker mark with a logo "T" to the upper side of the crossguard, near the grip (partly hidden under the buffer pad.) The handle grip is in attractive medium toned Bakelite.

In outstanding, excellent condition. The leather has only very light marks and a couple of miniscule scuffs that are barely noticeable - no tears, scratches or significant wear, and fully retains its magnificent original gloss. The brilliant blade is literally pristine: free of any scratches, pitting, oxidation spots or even the usual in- and-out wear - really as good as they come. The grip is likewise perfect, completely free of cracks or visible dings. The gold plating is extremely well-preserved and bright on all the brass parts. Condition wise, this superb example would be practically impossible to upgrade.
