    M 1936 steel helmet, dated 1937.

    M 1936 steel helmet, dated 1937.

There is clearly stamped manufacturer's code near the brim. There are also three additional ink stamps in the same location, the larger one of them showing the size of the shell (Size 3 or Large) and a faint but clearly legible 1937 date of manufacture. The liner is second pattern, period replacement, as is usually the case (due to the poor design of the first pattern). Extra set of rivets to the exterior to hold the liner; the original rivets are missing. Good size, will accommodate up to size 58 (US 7) with the current liner.

Condition is good overall. The shell is nice and sound, without cracks or dents. The comb is either reattached or a replacement; there are a couple of holes to the shell near the vent hole, but they are almost completely hidden from view by the comb. Exterior shows wear but no significant rust. The original coat of paint is mostly intact with the exception of a couple of small spots of touch-up repaint: at the comb and above the right rivet. An outline of the original red star is clearly visible on the front - a very uncommon feature. The liner is sound and shows only minor wear. The drawstring and chin strap are missing, but the attachment buckles are still present and functional (although rusty). Overall, an attractive original example - not one of the dug-up and completely restored pieces or replicas that we usually see offered on the market.
