Document for a Medal for the Defense of Soviet Polar Region,
issued on 30 July 1945 to Sergeant Major Aleksandr Aluferov.
The document is of the early type, printed on thinner and
somewhat glossier paper than the more common type (same type
of paper was also used for the early Defense of Moscow Medal
documents). The document shows ink stamp of the
Headquarters, Coastal Group of Soviet Troops, and is hand-
signed by the Commander of its Reconnaissance Department,
Col. Yakov Ishchenko (after the end of WW2, Ishchenko was
for a few years the Soviet military attaché in France, got
promoted to Major General, served under the GRU Military
Intelligence, and taught a "special intelligence" course at
the Soviet General Staff). The July 30th date of issue is
very interesting: several days later, the Soviet Coastal
Group became the Far Eastern Front and attacked the Japanese
troops in Manchuria.
The document is in good to very good condition. There are
light stains to the interior pages but they do not affect
the legibility of the text or overall appearance of the
certificate. The pages have separated along the spine - a
common problem with the documents of this type due to more
brittle paper - and have been repaired with a thin strip of
clear tape.
