Brass, enamels; 39.7 x 29.8 mm. The quality is far superior to the more recent issues in aluminum. Moreover, unlike even the brass badges from the 60s, this early version features screw back construction - just like the WW2 "Proficiency" series that preceded the Army Excellence badge of "unified" type.

The screw post is slightly reduced for convenience, but its remaining length of about 8 mm is more than sufficient for proper functionality.
