during the Patriotic War, getting a Guards status and earning honorific titles of "Stalingrad" and "Katowice" added to its name. From 1955
through the late 60s, it flew nuclear-carrying Tupolev Tu-16A bombers (Badger by the NATO classification). At the time, the unit was based
out of Poltava, Ukraine.
