From then on, Meretskov's military service resumed. He commanded the Volkhov Front during the relief effort to the besieged Leningrad and, eventually, lifting the siege. Later, commanded the Karelian Front, and finished the war in Norway in late 1944.

Promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union, Meretskov was appointed Commander of the Maritime Group of the Far Eastern Front and then Commander of the Far Eastern Front. The following appointments were commanding a succession of fronts: Maritime, Moscow, White Sea, and Northern. Since 1954, his career focused on military higher educational institutions.
