M 1968 Soviet Army Steel Helmet, dated 1978.

Painted olive drab, with ersatz leather pads and leather chin strap. This is the last Soviet model (aka SSh-68) which was widely used in Afghanistan. Shows serial number stamped on inside of the rim, several quality control stamps and the stamp with the size "2".

There are three separate Cyrillic size markings on these helmets: P1, P2, or P3 (i.e."R1", "R2", or "R3"). The size number appears as the first digit in the stamped serial number on the rim and in a stamp that also indicates the year of manufacture. Even the smallest M 1968 shell (in size 1) is large enough to fit

There are three separate Cyrillic size markings on these helmets: P1, P2, or P3 (i.e."R1", "R2", or "R3"). The size number appears as the first digit in the stamped serial number on the rim and in a stamp that also indicates the year of manufacture. Even the smallest M 1968 shell (in size 1) is large enough to fit over a 61/62cm head (about a US 7 3/4), whereas the size 2 is good for at least a size 64 (US Extra Large or Size 8). A proper fit, however, requires the adjustment of the liner to lift the shell up; in other words, the liner is supposed to support the shell and hold it away from direct contact with the head... An R2 is a Large size and its liner is meant to fit a 60/61 cm (US 7 ½ - 7 5/8) or smaller head.

The helmet is in excellent condition. It is apparently unissued and shows only minor shelf wear, just some scuffs and scratches that are not too detractive. There are no dents or significant rust; the original olive-green paint is mostly intact. The rivets are original and perfectly tight. The liner is very clean; a little dust to the interior from decades of storage will clean away easily. The chinstrap leather is very supple.
