A fascinating piece of history which presents slices of the world as it was in 1955. So many names of countries have changed, so many borders have shifted. Starting from the first pages, we see that after a token acknowledgement of the world in general, the publishers firmly focused on the USSR, from RSFSR out to the rest of the Soviet socialist republics, then expanded their attention

Starting from the first pages, we see that after a token acknowledgement of the world in general, the publishers firmly focused on the USSR, from RSFSR out to the rest of the Soviet socialist republics, then expanded their attention to the satellite socialist countries, and only then showing other countries. Physical maps remain "physical" but administrative ones are not-too-subtly called "political". Besides maps, each section features lots of tabulated data, hopefully accurate as of 1955.
In good condition. The volume has undergone a major restoration job at some point, and as far as we can see, only the very first map (Australia and Oceania) has separated again. The rest of the pages appear to be holding strong. All the text and graphics are absolutely clear and crisp. The leatherette of the cover shows very minor scuffing at the head and tail of the spine as well as along the edges. Insignificant corner bumps are evident at all 4 corners. The gilt of the lettering has lost most of its luster but the words are still quite visible.
