Silver Cigarette Case awarded on 10 November 1932 to Yegish
Measures 77 mm x 97 mm x 15 mm; weighs 140.0 g. Features
Niello artwork on the front and back in what is often
referred to as "traditional Caucasian" style. There are
hallmarks stamped on the exterior of both panels: silver
mark "875" with worker's head and a small character Delta (a
designation of the Moscow assay inspection), and a Cyrillic
maker mark ЮКМ ("YuKM") of an unknown Moscow workshop.
The interior is gilded and engraved "To Comrade Yegish
(Egish) Osipov in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of
the Workers' and Peasants' Police and for your selfless work
in fighting banditry. From the GURKM ASSR (State Directorate
of Workers' and Peasant's Police of Soviet Socialist
Republic of Azerbaijan), 10 November 1932, Baku."
Interestingly, there is another set of "875" silver
hallmarks applied on the interior of the panels, but they
are poorly struck and far less clearly defined than the ones
on the exterior.
The cigarette case is in very good to excellent condition.
The exterior shows only very light scuffs and minor
scratches, no dents, nicks or heavy wear of any kind. The
artwork is perfectly preserved on both sides. The closure
button functions smoothly; the hinge is completely intact;
the alignment of the two panels is perfect. The gilt finish
on the interior shows wear but is still visible. Overall, an
attractive and very unusual piece with a lot of character.
