Sniper Badge, by the NKPS Factory, circa 1943-44.

Sniper Badge, by the NKPS Factory, circa 1943-44.

Brass, enamels; measures 43.8 x 35.6 mm. This variation is among the earliest produced. Features domed medallion and flat, tall scrolls of the top ornament with a smooth upper edge. There is a distinctive vertical line pattern under red enamel with counter-relief visible on the reverse of the badge.

In very fine to excellent condition, outstanding for a combat proficiency badge of WW2 period. The enamel is very well preserved, free of the usual chips, repairs or significant flaking. The red enamel has tiny contact marks throughout but almost no wear visible without magnification. There are a few tiny surface flakes to the white band that are nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye and minimal amount of rubbing. Both the white and red enamel retain very nice luster

The details of the rifles and wreath are extremely well- preserved and crisp. The fragile silver finish on the rifles and hammer & sickle emblem, grey finish on the edge of the shield and gilt on the wreath are almost completely intact - a very uncommon case! The silver plating on the reverse is practically pristine. The screw post is full length, nearly 14 mm. Note that in a rather typical manner, the solder that holds it to the badge was applied in a sloppy fashion and a part of the base of the screw post "hangs in the air"; that being said, the attachment of the screw is firm and appears to be completely sound. The screw plate marked "ShMZ NKPS" is of the period and believed to be original to the badge.

Established in May 1942, Sniper is one of the initial seven badges that started the WW2 "Proficiency" series. /See "Breast Badges of the Red Army, 1941-1945, p. 80, fig. 3/
