Navy officer dagger with leather-wrapped sheath and gilded brass fittings, numbered, dated 1945.

Navy officer dagger with leather-wrapped sheath and gilded brass fittings, numbered, dated 1945.

Early type without catch button which is characteristic feature of Soviet WW2 daggers, as opposed to those manufactured in 1948 and later. Pommel shows appropriate pre-1948 Soviet state emblem with 11 scrolls representing the number of republics in the Soviet Union. Overall length in scabbard is 13 "; 8 " blade.

The naval motifs shown on both sides of the scabbard's throat are lightly rendered, rather than the deeper stamped/etched versions as seen on daggers produced later during the Cold War. This variation also has a bigger anchor. Attractive orange toned Bakelite grip. The highly polished brilliant blade has engraved serial number 007969 on the throat on one side - a very low number even for a wartime dagger. On the other side is maker mark "ZIK" and a 1945 date. The scabbard leather has glossy surface (as opposed to the grainy kind) with slight brownish tinge as is occasionally observed on some of the earliest Soviet daggers.

In very good to excellent condition. The blade only minimal in-out wear and some very faint polishing marks; it is completely free of nicks, oxidation spots or pitting. The scabbard leather is still very supple and attractive showing healthy sheen, with only minimal amount of scuffing and scratches. Brass fittings of the scabbard are very well preserved having attractive light patina, no blemishes or dents. The nails holding the fittings are nice and tight. The Bakelite grip is clean and has only light scuffs, completely free of cracks or other noticeable damage. The pommel and cross-guard are likewise free of excessive wear, have only minor dings. Overall, this is an extremely attractive example of WW2 Soviet dagger!
