Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd cl, Type 2, "Small" variation, #617161, circa early to mid 1945 issue.

Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd cl, Type 2, "Small" variation, #617161, circa early to mid 1945 issue.

Silver, 14 K gold (hammer & sickle emblem), enamels; 45.7 mm in height, 43.5 mm in width. The outer dimensions of this piece are smaller than the comparable Concave reverse issues by the Leningrad Mint, although not necessarily smaller than some other variations of the Patriotic War, 2nd cl . Its proportions however are such that they create an impression of a much smaller piece. This "Small" version is often referred to as "Fish Eye" ("Rybiy Glaz") by collectors in Russia. The center medallion diameter is approx. 24 mm. According to the currently available data (see Mondvor.narod.ru), this variation was manufactured in March 1945 and had 2 serial number ranges: approx. 479000 to 483000 and 580000 to 618000. Thus, no more than roughly 42- 43 thousand were ever produced. The scarce "Small" variation is highly sought by collectors due to its very distinctive look. Note that the serial number of this piece is very close to the upper limit for its version.

In very fine to excellent condition. The red enamel is very well preserved overall having a couple of small flakes at the tip of the upper left arm, a barely noticeable scratch to the right of the hammer & sickle, and a few microscopic contact marks elsewhere; these minor defects are nearly unnoticeable and the enamel retains beautiful tone and luster. The white band has flaking at its outer edge which is barely noticeable. The starburst shows no significant wear and the silver has developed extremely attractive, dark patina on both the obverse and reverse. The screw post is full or near full length, over 13.5 mm. Comes with original WW2 era screw plate.

An extremely attractive and interesting example.
