In excellent, near mint condition - extremely uncommon for any Soviet or Mongolian badge of its vintage. The enamel is essentially flawless: there are a couple of microscopic contact marks that can be found with a 10x loupe, but they are completely invisible to the naked eye. The enamel shows a magnificent luster throughout.

The details of the cavalryman and his horse are perfect and extremely crisp; all the original silver is completely intact creating a full impression that the badge is made in solid silver. The silver plating on the reverse is likewise perfect. The screw post is full length, approx. 13.5 mm, and includes the original screw plate with the Soviet Mint logo (note that the screw plate is made of silver-plated brass but is otherwise of the same design as was used on the WW2 Soviet Hero Stars). All-in-all, this is an exceptional example of the Khalkhin Gol Badge: in our 30+ years of doing business, we haven't seen a better specimen.

Awarded for participation in the 1939 battle against the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria, this badge was later upgraded in rank to be considered a medal. The flat back variation was issued mostly to Mongolian troops and also to some of the Soviets who had not received the badge earlier. According to the research by Khuujii Urnukh, the date of manufacture for all Variation 2 badges is 1946; a total of 5504 of the Variation 2 badges were ever made.
