All the graphics and lettering are high-quality embroidery. The obverse features profile portraits of Lenin & Stalin, with Stalin unobtrusively positioned in front of Lenin as was the safe way of doing it in those years, surrounded by wreaths of oak leaves and the inevitable symbols of the Soviet Power - the red star and the hammer and sickle.

The lettering above the portraits reads "To the winner of socialist competition from the Ukrainian Geological Department and the group Trade Union Committee". Below the portraits is the then-popular Soviet slogan "Under the banner of Lenin-Stalin - forward, towards new victories!"

The verso is entirely dedicated to the symbols of communist world domination: the hammer and sickle emblem framed by the motto "Proletarians of all countries, unite!"

The banner is in very good to excellent condition. All the graphics and lettering are wear-free and show bright vibrant colors, as well as very high-quality stitching. The fringe is intact and has retained its rich gold luster.

There is some wear to the top and bottom of the flagpole sleeve where the flag was probably nailed to the wooden flagpole. The fabric of the obverse is mostly clean, showing just a couple of tiny stains, the worst of which is on one of our photos next to a quarter coin for size reference.

The verso shows a bit more staining, most of it faint and not too detractive. Again, the worst cluster of stains is shown in our photo next to a quarter coin for size reference.

All this wear is mostly "lost" in the large size of the flag, and only adds to its authenticity and age.

Geological prospecting, exploration and development are always very important, but in the 1940s and 50s they were attributed critical strategic military and economic importance against the political background of the fledgling Cold War and the post-war restoration of the country's economy.

Please note that the yardstick in our last photo is for size reference.
