Autograph of Marshal of the Soviet Union Fyodor Tolbukhin, partially typed document signed, 1947.

Single page, 8.5" x 11.5", front and verso. The document is a standard form for service evaluation and promotional recommendation of Lt. Col. Mikhail Lisyanskiy for the post of Deputy Brigade Commander, Technical Support. Found lacking in multiple aspects of this position, Lisyanskiy is not confirmed for the post. Tolbukhin's typed resolution above his signature is rather lenient, requiring an early re-evaluation by 1 May 1948. The resolution is dated 14 December 1948. The year has to be a typo made by the secretary typing up the resolution, the year should be 1947.

In very good condition. Shows a few staple holes and a fold line, not affecting the text, and a few barely noticeable wrinkles and corner bumps. Mild even age-toning to the paper adds to the authentic look of the document. All the text and signatures are clear and legible.

Fyodor Tolbukhin (Федор Иванович Толбухин, 1894 - 1949) served as Chief of Staff of several fronts in 1941-42. In 1942, he was Deputy Commander of Stalingrad Military District, and during the Battle of Stalingrad he commanded the 57th Army. In 1943, he was elevated to the position of Front Commander, and by the end of the war had commanded, at various times, the Southern, 3rd Ukrainian, and 4th Ukrainian Fronts. One of the most highly decorated generals in the Soviet military, with an Order of Victory, two Orders of Suvorov, 1st cl. and an Order of Kutuzov 1st cl.

He is also known as "the forgotten marshal," although he led the Red Army to victory in battles which Moscow saluted 34 times. He was the only general who liberated five European capital cities from the Germans and their allies: Vienna, Belgrade, Budapest, Bucharest and Sofia. The fronts he commanded liberated the Crimea, Donbass and Moldova. Yet, Tolbukhin was given Hero of the Soviet Union only posthumously.

Please note that Tolbukhin's portrait photo is for illustrative purposes only and is not included with the document.
