In gilded brass. Measures 50.2 mm in height, 51.4 mm in width (between the edges of the wreath in its widest section); weighs 24.7 g not including the washer and wing nut; total weight with the washer and nut is 40.6 g. Two-piece construction: the double-headed eagle is a separate part superimposed on the stamped wreath with the gilded chalice often referred to as the Goblet of Aesculapius (Eskulap) in Russian sources. The form of the badge is distinctively rounded as compared with the more common oval-shaped military doctor badges of the period. The entire piece is beautifully detailed in the best tradition of Russian imperial decorations.

The crown that had once topped the badge was removed, likely during the Provisional Government period following the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II in the early 1917. This was a common practice at the time and more often than not, a matter of self-preservation rather than true disdain for the monarchy on the part of the owner of the badge. During the shaky provisional government rule, law and order broke down throughout Russia, vigilantes ran amok targeting anyone associated with the old regime, and wearing a badge with the imperial crown became not just "politically incorrect" but downright dangerous.

Beside the removed crown, the badge is in excellent condition. The details of the eagle, wreath, snakes and chalice are perfectly preserved and crisp - including the highly exposed coat of arms of Moscow on the eagle's chest. The original gold plating on the snakes and chalice is still clearly visible. There is a very attractive patina to the brass throughout. The parts of the badge are tightly attached.

The badge includes a period washer in silver-plated brass which is probably original to the badge. The wing nut fits the screw post perfectly and, in all likelihood, is also original to the badge. The screw post measures over 19 mm in length, has not been shortened.

Please note, the penny in our photo is for size reference.
