Excellent Mortarman badge, Pobeda Factory, circa mid- to late- 1940s.

Excellent Mortarman badge, Pobeda Factory, circa mid- to late- 1940s. Brass, enamels; 46.0 mm x 37.2 mm. Features well-defined wreath and relatively tall embellishment above the center medallion consisting of 6 wide scrolls. The edge of the shield has 23 visible nails. The "thick" 120-mm mortar is the earlier, 1938 model. This variation is listed as NKPS in the Airapetyan's catalog but is now believed to be of an early Pobeda Factory manufacture.

In very fine to excellent condition, well above average for a Proficiency award of its vintage. The red enamel shows small contact marks and minimal amount of rubbing but has no significant flaking and retains much of its original luster. The white band has a couple of tiny, barely noticeable chips in 2 to 4 o'clock segment and light rubbing throughout. The details of the wreath and mortar are exceptionally well preserved and crisp, and most of their original fire gilt finish is present. The grey finish on the edge of the shield is likewise completely intact.

The silver plating on the reverse is well-preserved having modest amount of verdigris that adds character. The screw post is full length, over 12 mm. Comes with original Pobeda Factory screw plate which fits the screw perfectly and matches the badge precisely in appearance (including the silver finish on its reverse). Overall, a very attractive example of WW2 era Mortar Man's badge.
