Medal for Valor, Type 1, Variation 1 (on a Variation 3 suspension), #26913, circa early 1942 issue.
Silver, enamel; medallion measures 37.2 mm wide, 3.0 mm thick. Features fine quality enamel in the letters and hand-engraved serial number. The medal comes on a Type 1 Var. 3 suspension device of early WW2 vintage, apparently a wartime replacement for the original small Variation 1 suspension. The suspension is in silver with brass screw post of 3.9 mm diameter; the suspension measures 25.1 mm wide in its upper portion, 17.2 - 17.5 mm in height not including the projection for the connecting link at the bottom.
The medal is in very fine to excellent condition. There are minor dings throughout and light wear to the high points of the artwork, but the details are still nicely preserved. The enamel shows rubbing but no chips. The edge is free of bumps or significant knocks. The suspension comes complete with rectangular back plate in silver-plated brass, hexagon nut and mint marked brass screw plate that are original to it. The screw post is of full or near full length, measuring well over 9.5 mm from the back plate. The vintage ribbon is an old replacement. The connecting link is of the period and its ends are soldered. Overall, an attractive early WW2 medal with a good research potential (we haven't attempted to run archival research on it.)
