Order of the Red Star, Type 6, Variation 3, Sub-variation 2, #849681, circa late 1944 issue.
Silver, enamels; measures 47.3 mm, 49.6 mm in width; weighs 32.4 g not including the screw plate. Features pointy tips and flared edges of the star. The mint mark is in straight lines, approx. 8 mm wide. This specimen has beautiful enamel similar to much earlier issues and far better quality than most contemporary pieces. Note that its serial number is near the lower limit for the Sub-variation 2 as shown in The Order of the Red Star by Durov and Strekalov (serial number range of 800000 - 1023600).
In excellent condition. The enamel retains magnificent luster and has only a few miniscule scuffs and contact marks on the lower right arm, perfect otherwise. The center medallion has a few minor scratches to the background field, but its raised details remain practically pristine and exceptionally crisp - to the point that the entire the rifle sling, facial features of the soldier and even his fingers are clearly visible - a very uncommon case. There is beautiful dark patina to silver on both sides. The screw post is full length, over 12.5 mm. Original WW2 era screw plate is included.
