Military Aviator's Leather Flight Jacket, circa mid 1940s - early 50s.
In fine quality, soft brown leather. Features zipper in the front, push button closures at the waist, a single zippered chest pocket and two additional hand warmer pockets. The large cuff buttons are made of natural horn. The hardware is all Soviet made as opposed to foreign made zippers and buttons supplied by Lend-Lease. It is especially unusual to see a Soviet "Молния" (Molniya or "Lightning" is the actual word for a zipper in Russian language) logo stamped on the slider. The liner is in gray cotton. The internal pocket has sewn-in manufacturer's label of the Klara Tsetkin Garment Factory in Moscow. There are vent holes with painted metal grommets in the armpits.
This jacket is clearly copied from an American A-2 well familiar to Soviet WW2 pilots, although with some modifications. It is astonishingly well made, with many details not usually found on the Soviet uniforms of WW2 or early post-war era. This clearly shows that pilots were receiving special treatment even in times of austerity, unlike most other branches of the military, almost no cost was spared to ensure that their equipment was up to the highest standards.
Size is approximately Medium / Large. Measures approximately 46" at the chest under the armpits. Length from top of collar to bottom hem 28". Length of sleeve from shoulder seam 25". Uncommonly tall and big for a pilot's uniform of the period.
In excellent condition. The leather is still healthy and supple, with just modest wear that adds character but free of tears, significant soiling, dry patches or other major damage. The liner is likewise clean and sound. Just an outstanding piece, and a very hard one to find.
The price is for the Jacket only, other items shown in our photo (pilot's helmet, goggles, gimnasterka field shirt and pants) are not included but may be available separately on our website.
