Air Force pilot leather helmet, 1930s- early 40s.

Air Force pilot leather helmet, 1930s- early 40s.

In black leather, with short flaps. Dark brown lamb fur liner. Five-sided earphone covers with uncommon double snap fixtures providing two possible closing positions apparently depending on the use of earphones. This type of helmet never had built-in avionics or cable, but there are holes cut in the leather for the earphones under the earphone covers. Approx. size 58 (about US size 7 .)

In good overall condition. There are scuffs and wear to the exterior, but the leather remains supple and overall presentable. The fleece lining is heavily worn and partly missing in the most exposed ears near the forehead and on the earflaps, but most of it is present and stable, not shedding. The retaining chin strap is intact and sound; complete with the buckle that still has its original zinc coating and not showing much oxidation. The earphone covers are completely intact with all the snap buttons present and fully functional, although they have some rust and are missing almost all of the original coat of brown paint. The straps for the goggles on the back of the helmet are missing (as is usually the case with wartime Soviet aviator helmets.)

An attractive piece despite some "honest" wear and obvious wartime service use, this helmet can be a nice addition to a collection of WW2 aviation.
