Khalkhin Gol Medal (aka Badge for the Battle at Khalkin Gol), Variation 1, 1941- 1946 issue.

Khalkhin Gol Medal (aka Badge for the Battle at Khalkin Gol), Variation 1, 1941- 1946 issue.

Brass, silver plating, enamels. Measures 37.2 mm in height not including the flagpole finial, 36.7 mm in width. Fine quality Type 1 badge featuring relief reverse construction, manufactured by the Moscow Artists Cooperative (MTKh).

In outstanding, excellent condition - one of the best examples we have ever seen. The enamel has no wear visible to the naked eye. There are a couple of microscopic flakes at the upper edge of the banner and a few contact marks elsewhere, but none of them are detectable without a 10x loupe. The enamel retains magnificent luster throughout. The details of the horseman are perfect and exceptionally crisp. Nearly all of the silver finish is still present showing only tiny amount of wear to the highest point - a very unusual case. The silver plating on the reverse of the badge is absolutely pristine.

The screw post is full length, approx. 11 mm, and comes with original wing nut marked "Moscow Artists Cooperative" which is slightly loose on the top few mm of the screw post but still fits tightly on the reset of it. Overall, this Khalkhin Gol Badge is a truly superb piece - literally impossible to upgrade for Variation 1.

The badge was awarded for participation in the battle against the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria in 1939. The relief reverse variation was manufactured prior to the Patriotic War and issued during 1941 - 1946 period. Among its 3000 recipients most were Soviet veterans of the battle at Khalkhin Gol. Although it was initially called a badge, this is essentially a campaign medal, and was later upgraded in status in Mongolia to be considered just that.
