Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, Type 2 "Starback" variation (Krasnokamsk Mint), #150657, awarded on 21 May 1944 to Private Nimat Abdulaev.

Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, Type 2 "Starback" variation (Krasnokamsk Mint), #150657, awarded on 21 May 1944 to Private Nimat Abdulaev.

Silver, 14 K gold (hammer and sickle emblem), enamels. Measures 46.8 mm in height, 44.5 mm in width; weighs 26.4 g without screw plate. This specimen features curved down mint mark and very pronounced star- shaped relief to the reverse. It belongs to a relatively small series of "Starbacks" by Krasnokamsk Mint, one of some 35000 made in total according to current estimates.

In very fine condition. There is a single small chip penetrating to silver at the base of the upper left arm; additionally, there are surface chips at the tips of the upper right and left arm that do not penetrate to silver and therefore not as noticeable. The enamel on the arms also has microscopic flakes and tiny contact marks throughout. The white enamel shows only some tiny flakes and rubbing. The red enamel in the center is perfect. There is minimal wear to the raised points of the hammer & sickle emblem, not very noticeable. The silver starburst has some dings, none of them very detractive. The screw post is very long, nearly 14 mm in length, as characteristic for this version of the order. The screw plate is a replacement, but it is of WW2 era and fits perfectly.

Nimat Abdulaev, an Uzbek national, was born in 1916. He took part in the Patriotic War starting from 1942, and by early 1944 had been wounded in battle four times. He nevertheless still remained a Private as of May 1944 when he was serving with the 131st Separate Recon Company, 171st Rifle Division, 79th Rifle Corps, 3rd Shock Army, 2nd Baltic Front. During one of the reconnaissance missions, he was with the support group that was to provide cover to the team tasked with capturing a prisoner. As the strike team rushed forward, Abdulaev went over the parapet of the trench methodically killing the Germans running to help their comrades that came under assault. His resolute actions on that day ensured the success of the operation.

The Order of the Patriotic War that was awarded to him based on recommendation of the regiment commander was Abdulaev's first decoration. Later, this courageous scout also received a Medal for Valor for killing three Nazi soldiers in hand- to-hand combat during another mission to capture a prisoner. It is noteworthy that the 171st Rifle Division remained a part of the 79th Rifle Corps through the Battle of Berlin, and it was none other than soldiers of this corps that captured the Reichstag and raised the Victory Banner over its charred ruin. In all likelihood, Nimat Abdulaev took part in that final battle.

Research Materials: photocopy of the award commendations for the Orders of the Patriotic War 2nd cl. and Medal for Valor (note that he received the latter based on a recommendation for an Order of Glory 3rd cl.); copy of the page from the Russian archival record showing the serial number of the Patriotic War and name / rank of the recipient; copy of the relevant page of the Patriotic War 2nd cl award decree. Information on the 171st Rifle Division is available in the Volume X "Red Swarm" of the Charles Sharp's series "Soviet Order of Battle in World War II."
