1935 Red Army Senior Officer (General) hat badge, larger
size for a winter hat, 1935-1940.
In magnetic steel, brass plating and high quality enamel;
scarce large variety measuring 36.0 mm wide. The hammer &
sickle emblem is a separate part attached by wires.
In very fine condition. The enamel is partly replaced on the
lower left arm of the star. The enamel on the other arms is
very well preserved having only a few tiny scratches, no
chips or significant flaking, and retains beautiful luster.
The brass finish on the hammer & sickle emblem shows only
minimal wear. The attachment prongs are original and intact,
although bent (please note that we cannot guarantee that
they will not break if you try to straighten them out, and
would advise against trying to do it.)
This hat badge was issued to an RKKA officer with rank
equivalent of Major General or higher. At the time, they
were called "Brigade Commander", "Division Commander" etc.
as the Soviet authorities were yet unwilling to re-introduce
the general ranks of the hated Russian Imperial army. When
the General and Admiral ranks finally appeared in the Red
Army in 1940, this hat badge was replaced by the round
/Borisov, "Breast Badges of the Soviet Armed Forces, 1918 -
1991", fig. 15/.
