Excellent Railway Rebuilder Badge, circa mid-1940s.

Excellent Railway Rebuilder Badge, circa mid-1940s.

Brass, enamels. 39.1 mm tall x 26.5 mm wide; the screw post measures approx. 3.7 mm thick. This is an early version of one of the awards of the WW2 Railway Proficiency Series (1943-57). Unlike the later issues, this badge features a pronounced 3-d relief to the oval center medallion.

In excellent condition. The enamel is essentially perfect everywhere and retains beautiful luster. There are a couple of contact marks and internal imperfections on the banner resulting in tiny dark spots, but these are almost unnoticeable to the naked eye. There are no chips, flakes or significant scratches. Raised details of the artwork are perfect and crisp. The original silver and gilt finishes are nearly pristine on both the obverse and reverse. The screw post is full length, over 12 mm. Includes original, pre-1946 screw plate marked "NKPS Sh.M. Z" (Narkomat of Railroad Transportation, Mechanical Stamping Factory"). An extremely attractive piece, a real standout among the badges of this series that usually display at least some degree of damage.

Rebuilding the railroad track and rolling stock destroyed by the Luftwaffe or blown up by retreating German ground troops was of paramount importance to the Soviet war effort. Railway workers routinely labored round the clock, in miserable weather and under constant bombardment, to complete the task. Even in the initial period of the Patriotic War, the uncanny speed of the repairs often frustrated all German efforts to disrupt Soviet transportation system.
