Flag for the USSR Minister of Defense, dated 1984.
In wool bunting. Very large size, about 6 ½' x 4 ¼'. This
flag is similar to the flag of the Supreme Commander of the
Soviet Navy but with two blue stripes at the bottom instead
of one. The manufacturer's and inventory marks on the hoist
sleeve indicate that the pattern was authorized in 1981, and
this particular flag was manufactured in 1984.
In outstanding, excellent condition. There are a couple of
tiny moth nips to the blue field which could be found only
at very close inspection, but the flag is otherwise perfect,
free of soiling, holes, tears or other damage. The colors
are vibrant, as fresh as new.
This rare flag was raised only when the Soviet Minister of
Defense was present onboard the ship.. Its size makes it
appropriate for a relatively large warship, perhaps a
destroyer or cruiser. The bunting version is especially
rare, and was used for regular sailing including combat
missions - as opposed to silk flags for naval processions.
