Order of Merit of Hungarian Republic, Grand Cross, Civil Division, 1947- 1949.

Order of Merit of Hungarian Republic, Grand Cross, Civil Division, 1947- 1949.

Silver gilt, enamels; measures 62.3 mm in height (including the eyelet), 57.1 mm in width; the center medallion is approximately 8 mm thick. Massive and beautifully made piece. The connecting link is clearly mint marked "P.V.B.P." Both the link and the ornate suspension loop for the neck ribbon are original to the cross.

In very fine condition. The enamel is exceptionally well preserved overall although there is a tiny chip under the eyelet, almost unnoticeable due to its location and overall size of the award. The enamel is completely free of flaking, visible scratches or other wear elsewhere. The center shield is pristine. The reverse center medallion has a scuffs and a small dent near at approximately 7 o'clock which is not very detractive. The original gold plating on the shield, center medallion and borders of the cross is still present although partly obscured by silver patina.

Only 121 of all versions of the Grand Cross (highest) class of the Order of Merit were bestowed in total before the award was replaced in 1949 with the more communist looking Order of Merit of the Hungarian People's Republic ("Nagy Magyar Kitüntetéskömyv", Peter Bodrogi et al, C.2005). Its version featuring gilded shield in the center was originally intended as civilian issue as opposed to the military version with the enameled shield. In practice however, the enameled version was reportedly awarded to both military and non-military recipients alike, whereas the gilded version was soon phased out. While all the Civil Division awards are rare, they are nearly impossible to find in the highest or "Grand Cross" class.
