Rare Wedding Portrait Taken During the Civil War, dated 9 November 1919.
Measures approx. 4 ¼ " x 6 ¼ " with an image size of 3 ¾ " x 5 ¼ ". Shows an Officer and his Bride along with their Best Man and a Bridesmaid. The backing carries the logo of the studio and "Cabinet Portrait" in gold lettering on the bottom. The verso carries the photographer's logo stamped in the middle and a hand-written notation in pencil, "1919, November 9. Wedding Day of Vasiliy and Ekaterina [both last names illegible]".
In excellent condition. The image is very slightly scuffed, mostly at the edges and in the right bottom part, not detracting.
Very sharp image provides excellent detail of this very informative and unusual photo. A celebration of life in the midst of fighting and death, the place and date of this photo are significant: it was taken in the studio of S. Kashtan, town of Stelin, Minsk Region, where the Civil War was raging in November of 1919.
The atmosphere is very decorous and modest. Interestingly, it appears that there is snow on the officer's boots! The wedding party is apparently posing on snow covered ground in front of a backdrop brought outside from the photographer's studio! (The young bride is wearing high top lace up leather boots.)
