    M 1940 steel helmet (SSh-40), dated 1943.

    M 1940 steel helmet (SSh-40), dated 1943.

Features six point liner attachment; olive green coat of paint. Three-pad liner in black ersatz leather, as typical for the 1943 production year. The chin strap is also a standard issue in soft khaki cotton canvas, complete with original retaining loop and steel adjustment buckle.

There is a factory stamp to the inside shell on the back, standard for wartime production; it shows letter Л ("L", for the Lysvenskiy Metal Factory), a 1943 date of manufacture, and size 1 (which will easily fit up to European size 58 or US size 7 ). Next to the factory ink stamp is a serial number stamped into the metal that signifies the shift at the forge that produced the metal sheet for the shell. There is also a star-shaped ink stamp with number 502 inside and 79 underneath, inventory markings added by a representative of the military unit that received the helmet from the factory. Additionally, this piece has an ink stamp МПВО ("MPVO" for Local Air Defense) - an extremely unusual feature.

Condition is very good to excellent overall. There shell is completely free of dents, bumps, cracks or any other significant flaws. There are light scuffs to the original coat of paint and minor amount of oxidation. The rivets are original, undisturbed and tight. The liner, drawstring, chinstrap and hardware are original, have not been replaced or repaired. One of the pads of the liner has small tears, but its cushioning material is largely intact. The chin strap is very nicely preserved; its metal hardware has some rust that ran off into the surrounding web fabric, but the chin strap remains perfectly sound and fully functional.

This M-40 is one of the better wartime examples we have seen in recent years. Besides being complete, it is nicely preserved for a Soviet helmet of the mid-Patriotic War period. Moreover it shows a very uncommon MPVO stamp in addition to the usual markings.
