Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd cl, Type 2 "Trench Reverse"
variation, #117519, circa mid-1944 issue.
Silver, 14 K gold (hammer & sickle emblem), enamels.
Measures 46.5 mm tall, 44.6 mm wide. The dimensions of the
trench ("kanava" as it's known to Russian speaking
collectors) are approx. 22 mm outer diameter, 14 mm inner
diameter. The serial number is engraved on a small flat
area at 6 o'clock, in relatively large numerals
characteristic of the Leningrad Mint (as opposed to the
"Trench Reverse" issues by the Moscow Mint.)
According to Mondvor.narod.ru, this specimen is from the
series of "trench reverse" Orders of Patriotic War 2nd cl.
produced by the Leningrad Mint soon after the lifting of
the siege. Currently known serial number range for this
series is 110071 - 308963, but because there are other
versions sharing the same range - and also because not all
numbers were utilized - the number of "trench reverse"
versions ever produced is drastically smaller than the
range alone would suggest.
In fine to very fine condition. The red enamel is repaired
on the top arm of the star. The other arms have a couple of
microscopic flakes at the tips and a few tiny contact
marks, none of which are easily noticeable. There are also
a couple of tiny flakes to the red enamel in the center
medallion. The white band has minor contact marks only.
The details of the starburst, rifle and sword are well-
preserved and crisp. The reverse shows beautiful even
patina to silver. The screw post is full length, well over
13.5 mm, and includes an original wartime screw plate.
