Order of Lenin, Type 5, Variation 2 (Durov Type IV, Variation 1, Sub-Variation 2), #24852, circa early 1945.

Order of Lenin, Type 5, Variation 2 (Durov Type IV, Variation 1, Sub-Variation 2), #24852, circa early 1945.

In solid 23 K gold, platinum and enamels. Measures 42.9 mm in height (incl. the eyelet), 37.9 mm in width; weighs 33.9 g (not including the suspension and connecting link). Unlike the much more common Var. 1, this variation features flat reverse without the circular "dimple" depression in the center. The serial number is stamped in the upper part of the reverse, in the manner standard for this version.

In very fine to excellent condition, very respectable for any Lenin of WW2 issue, let alone the scarce "no dimple" version. The enamel has a few small surface flakes along the edges of the banner, mostly near the joining of its upper and lower segments. The damage does not penetrate to the gold and is therefore not very noticeable. There is also tiny amount of flaking to the red band around the center medallion. The enamel is perfect elsewhere, completely free of scratches, rubbing or other visible flaws, and shows very attractive luster throughout.

The details of the gold wreath and platinum bas-relief are perfect and crisp. The reverse has a few minor dings along its raised edge but the center portion is pristine, with perfect stippling and attractive toning to the gold. Comes on a WW2 suspension, a two-layer model in brass with self- locking pin. The old, possibly original ribbon is perfectly clean and sound. The connecting link is appears to be original and although deformed by the weight of the medallion, has not been cut.
