Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, Type 2 Variation 1, #158601, awarded on 1 February1945 posthumously to Junior Lieutenant Aleksandr Ivanov.

Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, Type 2 Variation 1, #158601, awarded on 1 February1945 posthumously to Junior Lieutenant Aleksandr Ivanov.

In solid 14 K gold, silver and enamels. Measures 45.8 mm in height, 44.5 mm in width; weighs 30.8 g not including the screw plate. Features single-line mint mark.

In excellent, near mint condition, exactly as would be expected of a posthumous award that was never worn. The enamel is flawless. The hammer & sickle emblem and golden starburst are pristine. All of original factory-applied silver finish on the rifle and sword is present - a very unusual case for a WW2 issue. The screw post is of full length, approx. 14 mm (measured from the reverse of the silver star.) Original wartime screw plate is included.

Aleksandr Ivanov was born in 1912 and joined the Red Army in June 1941, the first month of the Patriotic War. He was at the front starting from October 1941, serving initially with the Western Front, then Northwestern Front, and from November 1944, with the 1st Ukrainian Front. In February 1943 he was awarded with a Medal for Combat Service, his only decoration of the war that he actually got to wear. In January 1941 he took part in the Vistula - Oder offensive serving as commander of an SU-76 self-propelled artillery piece with the 952nd Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, 59th Army. On 21 January, he was killed in action near the town of Olkusz in southern Poland, northwest of Krakow.

The award recommendation submitted by his regiment commander three days later was so terse that we will quote it here translated into English in its entirety:

Commander of an SU-76 Ivanov resolutely plunged his machine into the thick of battle in actions northwest of Krakow and on the approaches to the Dąbrowa Basin. He was the first to break into the enemy stronghold near the paper factory north of the town of Olkusz where he and his crew destroyed up to a platoon of Hitlerites. On 23 January 1945, he was killed by an enemy artillery shell in combat on the northeast edge of the Dąbrowa Basin. He deserves to be posthumously awarded with an Order of the Patriotic War, 1st cl.

Commander of the 952nd Tallinskiy Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment Guards Colonel (signed) Chesnokov.26 January 1945.

Research Materials: photocopy of the award recommendation, relevant page of the award decree, and relevant page from the Soviet archives concerning posthumous awards of the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st cl. The latter includes serial number of the award, name of the recipient, date and number of the award decree, and the date when the award was given to the closest relative "for safekeeping as memory". The record shows that Ivanov's badge was sent on 30 March 1945 to his widow Nadezhda Ivanova who at the time lived in the village of Derzhavino, Dzerzhinsky District, Chkalov (now Orenburg) Region of Russia. Information about the 952nd Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment is available in Volume XII "Red Hammers, Soviet Self-Propelled Artillery and Lend Lease Armor" of the Charles Sharp's order of battle series.
