"Karlsson-on-the-Roof" Porcelain Wall Plate, Korosten
Porcelain Factory, circa 1970s - 80s.
Measures 7" in diameter. Pre-drilled holes on the reverse
for attaching a hanging cord. Shows Karlsson, a jovial
little fat man with a propeller pack on his back who lives
on the roof of his building and loves sweets. The reverse
has the Korosten Factory trademark /fig. #384 in Volume One
of "Marks on Soviet Porcelain, Faience, and Majolica, 1917-
1991 by Nasonova et al"/.
Excellent condition with nicely preserved, bright image and
gold edging. No cracks or chips.
An immensely popular Soviet TV cartoon hero, he was based on
a character in Swedish author Astrid Lindgren's children's
books. Lindgren was, of course, probably better known in
Western Europe and in the US for her possibly more popular
Pippi Longstocking series of children's books.
Some writers seem to believe that Karlsson-on-the-Roof was
based on none other than German WW1 ace Hermann Goering who
lived for a while in Sweden after WW1, was well known at the
time for being a stunt pilot and was apparently Lindgren's
neighbor. We cannot absolutely confirm this speculation but
it is certainly an interesting conjecture!
