Document for a Medal for the Defense of Odessa, awarded on 30 July 1943 to Senior Technical Lieutenant Valeriyan Kokoshkin.

Document for a Medal for the Defense of Odessa, awarded on 30 July 1943 to Senior Technical Lieutenant Valeriyan Kokoshkin. Note an extremely early issue date - most Soviet defensive campaign documents were awarded in 1944 or later.

The document shows an ink stamp of the 1st Torpedo Boat Brigade, Black Sea Fleet, and is hand-signed by it commander, Captain 1st cl. Andrei Filippov. Capt. Fillipov was in charge of the Brigade from the beginning of the war till April 1944, and under his command the unit fought valiantly and received the honorific title of "Sevastopolskiy". It took part in the liberation of Novorossiysk, Taman and Crimea. Fillipov was later awarded with an Order of Ushakov 2nd cl. and in November 1944, was promoted to Rear Admiral at the age of 34 - thus becoming the youngest admiral in the Soviet Navy. After the conclusion of the battle for Crimea, Fillipov commanded the Sevastopol Naval Base, then Poti Naval Base and from 1945- 47, Severomorsk Naval Base. In the last years of his career until retirement in 1956, he commanded various naval schools including the Kaliningrad Naval School and Baltic Higher Naval Academy.

The document is in very good to excellent condition. There is the usual wear to the edges and folds from being stored folded in four, as was customary. There are no significant separations along the fold lines and no missing parts. The document is very clean overall having only a couple of minor spots and mild age toning.
