Guards Major Vladimir Shalimov, a single print from the "1941-1942 Glory to the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War" portrait series. Large 12" x 18" image designed for display in a public building or school.
The portrait is in excellent condition, although the borders were irregularly trimmed by a previous owner. A good framer could probably mat the print in such a way to disguise the paper loss on the left hand side.
Shalimov was a Shturmovik ground attack pilot. "He flew over 150 combat missions to strafe the enemy." The Shturmovik was, of course, the famous Soviet "flying tank".
The density and the weight of the paper used here is testament to how important the Soviet government felt this series to be: it cannot have been easy to source it, much less to send artists all over the front to locate the men to be honored and draw their portraits!
