1873 - Table Medal in Bronze.
35.16 mm wide; weighs 31.6 grams.
Obverse shows profile of Catherine the Great with

Empress Catherine II 1762-1796". Reverse shows profile of
Alexander II with the inscription "By the Grace of God
Alexander II Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia 24 November
Good condition. No edge knocks, one minor spot below bust
of Alexander, nice over all dark patina but the slight wear
on a few high points on both busts could indicate that the
medal was polished by the original 19th century owner.
This medal was distributed at the unveiling of the large
beautiful statue on the Nevsky Prospekt that commemorates
not only Catherine but also the famous men and women of her
era. It was then (and still is) the only statue of her in
the entire city of St. Petersburg. [If you have never been
there, we attach two photos of the monument to show you
it looks like.]
