Opening of Monument to Alexander II in Helsingfors
[Finland] 1894 Table Medal in Bronze.
69.4 mm wide; weighs 147.8 grams.
by A. Griliches. Obverse inscribed "Alexander II Imperator
et Magnus Princeps" (Alexander II Emperor and Grand Duke).
Reverse shows monument to Alexander and is inscribed
Ipse Sui Solus Posuit Monumenta" (to the greatness of him
alone this monument is put in place) and "Auspiciis
Alexandri Fenna Grata MDCCCXCIV" (Under the Auspices of
Alexander III to Please Finland).
Very fine to excellent condition. No edge knocks, no
spotting and the medal displays the unusual but attractive
color associated with this specific medal.
Do not be put off by the fact that the mottoes are in Latin
and rendered in Latin letters; Finland was firmly in the
Russian Empire at this point in time and the construction
this statue of Alexander II was intended as a sign of
Finnish loyalty to the Romanovs!
